Since my IELTS keep failing to meet the target band score 8,7,7,7, I decided to continue the English writing habit till the next test day. I truly hope that this way will work and improve my ability in both reading and writing.
Today’s article is The compelling case for working a lot less.
The main idea of this article is that people should take a rest while working. It is crucial that to have some blank time and study shows that it will be more productive than non-stop working. Take U.S president as a clear example, despite the busy schedule during the day, he must take 2 hours off for lunch break and have some free time to idle alone. According to researches which conducted recently found that it actually boost brain power and make people to be more creative.
I always have this thought that how come people in Asia, especially in Japan, tend to work longer and longer. In fact, long-working hour doesn’t really help people to improve the health condition. Instead, it harm them seriously. People may suffer higher risk of heart diseases if they work for too long. In the long-term, it also cut the life expectancy and case earlier death.
There is another interesting point that I would like to mention in this article. Many people may not dare to take personal leave to show their contribution to the company. However, A study shows that those people who take more than 10 days personal leaves get 2/3 chance for a pay rise than people who take less than 10 days. I found this is certainly fascinating because we always believe that work without rest is the best way to show to the top managers. Nevertheless, it seems that the measurable performance is more important than pretend to be hard-working.
Have you ever wondering that how the eight-hour working practice came from? Well, during the industrial revolution, factories used to work for 11 hours to 16 hours. However, those factory managers found that the productivity will be most if they keep the working hours at right. After they discovering this point, most of the factories follow this rule and the profit actually doubled.
In recent years, eight hours seems to be too long for modern workers. A study shows that office workers spend only 2 hours and 53 minutes on their job and fully concentrate on the tasks while other 5 hours and 7 minutes will be used to hang around the office, chat with co-workers, surf Facebook and even search for new job. That is, we may need to consider to cut the working hour since people just physically stay in office without practical output.
After work, rest is important. Some people may think sleep is the best way to relax and cut the stress. Research found that Active Rest will be the best way to cut the stress from work. it helps you to empty the mind and be ready for the next day’s challenges.
In conclusion, in this fast paced world, we may need to think how to slow down and enjoy the moments in our life. Moving fast doesn’t represent higher possibility to meet the goal, but slow down does.
